Chapter 15: Schizophrenia

People with schizophrenia are thought to be at increased risk of committing a violent crime. There are plenty of examples. In 2019, a man suffering with paranoid schizophrenia was acquitted of murder on grounds of insanity. He killed three pensioners when suffering from the delusion that he was uncovering a paeodphile ring. In 2016, there a similar case where a man killed his parents due to the delusion he was sending them to prison. He also plead not guilty on the grounds of insanity, and was instead committed to a mental hospital.

The number of people with serious mental health conditions who end up in prison has prompted suggestions such as a separate court to hear these cases.
